Members of the Grampian Association of Storytellers and the general public of Aberdeen
were entranced by the tales of professional storyteller Janis MacKay. Janis delighted
the group of adults with her traditional stories at the Queens Cross Church as part
of the 2009 Wordfringe festival on Friday 1 May. Janis showed the storytellers amongst
the audience how to use voice and gesture to best effect, and enchanted both storyteller
and novice alike with her charming stories and her beautiful delivery of them.
Janis began the night with a story about ‘the meat of the tongue’, which
illustrated how stories were far better a remedy for any type of ailment than tinned
tongue. She then went on to tell a range of different stories, all of which were
well received by the audience.
Janis MacKay has been working with stories for twenty years, and is a resident storyteller
in the Highlands. During her career she has also specialised in voice coaching and
teaching the art and craft of storytelling. She believes very strongly in the power
of storytelling to help develop confidence, variety and strength in speaking. The
Grampian Association of Storytellers were delighted that Janis took the time out
of her busy schedule to come to Aberdeen and share her wealth of stories with them.
