Music, poetry and stories from George Gunn, Tom Bryan, Angus Dunn and Magi Gibson
Wednesday 7 May 2008
Duff House, Banff [Venue 11]
What do you get when you put all four previous North Aberdeenshire Writers in Residence
in the same room, on the same evening? An excellent, rich, diverse, eclectic mix
of poetry, story and song, that's what you get! George Gunn, Tom Bryan, Angus Dunn
and Magi Gibson performed in the chronological order they had served writers in
the area, and what a service they provided! From the development of the North-East's
own literary magazines The Broken Fiddle through to the sophisticated, present
Pushing Out the Boat, to the instigation of writing festivals, readings and
solo publications, to the setting up and support of new writing groups, to the individual
support and opportunities they gave to the many writers under their wing. The list
goes on and on!
Apart from reminding us of their achievements, the evening was also a wonderful
opportunity to hear what they had personally taken away from the area during their
residency (a new partner, in one case!), what they had written during that time,
what had inspired these writings and pieces they were working on at present. Add
a glass of wine and a song performed beautifully by Stuart B. Campbell and all in
all it was a sublime evening. Thank you to Haworth Hodgkinson for coming up with
the idea and Huntly Writers for hosting it.
