Building a Character through Dialogue

in plays, novels, short stories — a workshop with Chris Hannan

Saturday 17 May 2008

Heugh Hotel, Stonehaven [Venue 16]

It all started with a round of introductions: My name is..., I write..., and my favorite film is.... OK, the fun is over, now we get down to work.

A passion for theatre animates Chris Hannan. Presenting us with our first challenge of the day, he declared: ‘Dialogue has nothing to do with people talking to one another.’

Through a series of practical exercises, the truth of this surprising revelation became apparent, Dialogue is ACTION. As each character becomes clear in the writer's mind, when their motives and intentions are known, their speech and actions are all one. Brilliant!
